Shanghai: The Pulse of Modern China
Shanghai is China’s largest city and its global financial hub, often described as the "Showpiece" of the country's booming economy. Located at the mouth of the Yangtze River, it is a city of dramatic contrasts. On one side of the Huangpu River stands The Bund, a waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era European buildings that recall the city’s history as a 19th-century treaty port. On the opposite bank, the Pudong skyline rises like a scene from a sci-fi movie, dominated by the towering Shanghai Tower and the iconic Oriental Pearl TV Tower.
Shanghai is a city that never sleeps, known for its world-class shopping on Nanjing Road and its vibrant culinary scene. Yet, amidst the skyscrapers, you can still find tranquility in the classical Yuyuan Garden or the French Concession’s tree-lined streets. It is a cosmopolitan metropolis where East meets West, and where tradition is constantly being reinvented. For photographers, Shanghai offers endless inspiration, from neon-lit nights to the hidden charm of old shikumen lane houses.

About this photoalbum
In February 2026, I reorganized my entire collection of photos from my travels in China spanning 2009 to 2025. Previously, the images were sorted by year, with locations nested under each trip. However, analytics show that more than 80% of my visitors come from China and Singapore. For them —and hopefully for many others— I believe this new structure is much more intuitive. The photos are now organized by location, with provinces and major cities as the primary categories. Under each destination, you will find subfolders for the specific years and months of my visits.
